Is Moss Killing Your Roof? Trusted Roof Cleaning in Vancouver WA
In the Pacific Northwest, a dirty roof isn't just a cosmetic issue—it's a ticking time bomb. Our professional soft-wash cleaning neutralizes biological growth at the root, securing your home's protection for years to come.
The Danger of PNW Humidity
More Than Just Ugly Stains
What looks like "dirt" on your roof is actually a biological invasion. Without proper treatment, Gloeocapsa magma and moss will feed on your shingles until they fail. Read about the real risks of skipping roof cleaning.
Shingle Granule Loss
Algae (the black streaks) feeds on the limestone filler in your shingles. This causes granules to loosen and fall off, stripping away your roof's UV protection and fire resistance — something we see on nearly every roof inspection in Salmon Creek and Hazel Dell.
Mechanical Damage
Moss roots anchor into the shingle mat. As they grow and fill with water, they lift shingle edges, allowing wind-driven rain to reach the roof deck and cause rot.
Biological growth feeding on shingle matting, causing premature failure.

Identifying Your Roof Threats
Most homeowners don't realize they have three distinct threats. Our certified technicians identify exactly what is feeding on your roof and apply the correct chemistry for each.
Gloeocapsa Magma (Black Algae)
The most common threat in the PNW. It traps heat and consumes your shingle's foundation. Risk: Overheating & early failure.
Bryophyta (Roof Moss)
Acts like a water-filled sponge. Breaks the waterproof seal of your roof. Risk: Deck rot & mold growth.
Lichen Scars
Small, crusty patches that are deeply rooted. They are permanent if not treated early. Risk: Permanent scarring.

Our Methodology
Professional 5-Step Roof Rescue

Inspection
We always start by taking a close look at your roof. This inspection helps us find any moss, algae, or debris that has built up. We check for problem spots like cracked shingles or areas where moss is growing thick.
Safe Moss Brushing
Next, we carefully brush the roof to remove about 80% of the moss and debris. We use soft brushes to avoid damaging your roof's shingles while still getting rid of most of the moss.
Cleanup
After brushing, we use backpack blowers to clean away the remaining dirt, moss, and algae. We also include a quick cleanup of any mess created during our work.
Zinc Sulfate Treatment
Once the roof is clean, we apply an FDA approved moss treatment/preventative. This powder treatment kills any moss spores that weren't removed earlier and helps stop moss from growing back.
Treatment Activation
To finish the process, we activate the moss treatment. This happens naturally with rain, but if the weather stays dry, we'll hose down the roof to make sure the treatment gets to work. It may take 2 to 4 weeks for the moss to fully disappear.
